In light of industrial decline, the porcelain industry has often taken to promote new development via various arts in industry programs. This has led Monika Patuszynska to many factory settings around the world. The common elements found within both functional and declining factories evoked new awareness of porcelains unruly and unpredictable nature in her creative process. Abandoned factories consistently carry the same trademarks: piles of rubble and plaster molds, leaking ceilings and forgotten projects. Through these elements, Patuszynska traces the stories common to porcelain, the methods and ideals that hold it up and attempt to portray it as something smooth and precious and willing to fit utilitarian specifications. Her process incorporates a fuller comprehension of the trials and procedures involved in creating porcelain. In effort to explore and elicit an understanding of the material and tactile language of porcelain, abandoned molds from distinctly discarded projects are collected and reconfigured to pose not only new forms, but a new existence of materiality for porcelain. New birth is given to ‘bastards’ and ‘orphans’ offspring of unknown parental origin, set free into the world, fully accepting the destined outcome of the creative experiment. Characteristics otherwise considered tarnished become provocative pronouncements of existence; cracks, fissures, and topples become fully and wholly themselves; servitude and uprightness becoming utterly meaningless. The decay of industrial decline and human aspiration, the material memory itself is transformed into a capsule like ice and rock through a glacier, serving nothing but its own existence.

    In 1999 she graduated from the Faculty of Ceramics and Glass at the Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław. She was the last designer at the Zakłady Porcelitu Stołowego Pruszków (Pruszków Table China Factory) and the last president of the International Ceramics Symposium “Porcelain Another Way”. Since 2009 she has been a member of the International Academy of Ceramics (AIC/IAC) based in Geneva. Between 2014 and 2016 she held the position of the Artistic Director at the Institute of Design in Kielce. Her works can be found in museum collections across the world, including the Museum of Modern Ceramic Art in Gifu, Japan, Jingdezhen Ceramics Museum in China, Mungyeong Ceramics Museum in Korea, Keramikmuseum Danmark in Denmark and Musée de la Céramique in Vallauris, France.
