Op zoek naar de subtiele spanning tussen verschillende elementen en de 

opeenvolging van vormen stapelt Annick Vandecappelle als een architect volumes ‘en suite’. In een spel met verhouding, ritme en evenwicht, snijdt zij open en voegt terug samen. Met delen en verbinden als onderliggend thema. Dat alles leidt tot vreemde composities van opnieuw samengestelde geometrische en biomorfe vormen. Heel streng en puur.

 

De inspiratiebronnen voor het werk zijn heel divers. Abstracte kunst uit de jaren twintig, dertig en art deco vormen regelmatig het vertrekpunt van het creatieve proces. Zo ontstaan er composities op het snijvlak van sculptuur en architectuur. Het werk is abstract en geometrisch. Traditionele elementen krijgen een nieuwe betekenis in autonome realisaties. 

De sculpturen worden vaak opgebouwd uit klei met grove chamotte. Hierdoor krijgen ze een ruw oppervlak, alsof ze uit steen gebeiteld zijn. Elk werk is een nieuwe zoektocht en een poging om telkens de grenzen te verleggen. Op zoek naar ‘the shape of things to come’.

Annick Vandecappelle (°1961) woont en werkt in Antwerpen. Na kunststudies in St-Lukas Brussel en een modecarrière is ceramiek haar nieuwe obsessie.

In last few years Annick Vandecappelle - a former fashion stylist - has devoted herself to a recently found obsession. Ceramic sculptures have become her new language. Analysing the subtle tension between different elements and forms, she cuts and reassembles. The clash of geometrical and biomorphic shapes gives birth to strange compositions, pure and rigid. Not unlike an architect she creates volumes ‘en suite’. All the while playing with proportion, rhythm and balance.

The things that inspire her are quite diverse. Abstract art of the twenties and thirties, as well as art deco regurarly spark the creative proces. Thus producing pieces halfway between sculpture and architecture by reappropriating traditional elements in standalone ceramic forms. The use of clay with a high chamotte percentage gives her work a stone-like appearance.

Each new piece is the result of a meticulous search and the starting point of an ever continuing attempt to redefine the possibilities. Always looking for the shape of things to come.

Annick Vandecappelle (°1961) works and lives in Antwerp. Studied decorative arts at St-Lukas in Brussels. Currently completing a ceramics course at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp.
